Watling Street Road
The Brief
An orthodontist practice in the outskirts of Preston had to remove
all its' garden to make way for customer parking. This left the client
with no outside space, apart from a small, slippery flat roof,
which had access from the first floor.
The Solution
The client had a lot of input in reaching the final design. An oriental feel
was favoured, and this was implemented into a lot of the details.
The main issue was how to make this compact space, feel larger and uncluttered. This was acheived by turning everything through 45 degrees, making the lines longer and give a feeling of space.
The client really wanted to achieve a quality finish, so materials such as Brazilian slate, sandstone paving, teak decking and real bamboo were used. Two small canals were incorporated with an ajoining waterfall. These canals help separate the different materials and add a real soothing atmosphere into the garden. Along with this, raised planters with generous foliage were used to give height, privacy and dappled shade. With all these elements combined, the garden makes you forget you are on a roof near a busy main road.
