Ashes Farm
The Brief
To create a new garden fit for an immaculately restored 400 year old listed farmhouse.
This had to complement the surrounding Lakeland landscape.
Due to the awkward layout, three very different areas had to be created.
The Solution
The first area was an isolated, long wedge shape. An artificial dry riverbed was
created to visually link this area to the house. The eye is drawn from the road,
along the riverbed, up to the stone monolith, and on to the house. As in other projects, stone was sourced
from local quarries.
Directly in front of the main house, is the second area. This is square, surrounded by a listed wall, and contains a large visible piece of bedrock. This lent itself to a more formal design. It was accomplished using a straight path from gate to front door, interrupted by a paved circle. A surrounding circle of grass softened the effect of the stone.
The final area was directly outside the kitchen and main access to the house. It needed to be a more intimate area comprising of large herbaceous beds and small meandering paths.
